When a factory develops into a town | Wülfing Museum Descend deep into the Wupper valley and embark on a journey back in time to the former world of Bergisch weaving. A town grew up here around a textile factory which is still reminiscent of the region's golden age. “Tuchfabrikation der Familie Wülfing in Lennep” was established on the Wupper in 1674. The factory was renamed “Johann Wülfing & Sohn" (J.W. & S.) in 1774. The river provided the energy for everything from washing the raw wool to producing the cloth all under one roof. Around this factory, its owners built a small town for their workers.
The historical picture overall has been preserved to this day. Some of the buildings in the town that is a monument to industrial history belong to the Wülfing Museum in the former factory. A tour takes you to the factory owner’s house, the workers’ settlement, past the train station and post office to the co-operative store and the baths, and provides authentic insights into life and work as it once was. One of the highlights is a steam engine from 1891. At 400 hp, it is one of the biggest in the Bergisches Land and was used in the early days to support water power.
By the way, you can combine a trip to the Wülfing Museum with a visit to the Lennep Textile Museum and find out a little more about textile production.
