Nature park schools
The nationwide "Nature Park Schools" introduce pupils to nature parks as diverse places of learning and experience, sensitize them to the special features of the homeland, enable a regional reference to educational plans as well as the original experience of nature and culture in the environment of the school and contribute to education for sustainable development (ESD). The core of the Nature Park Schools network is the establishment of a firm, lasting cooperation between the nature parks and schools.
In June 2016, the Hülsenbusch community primary school was honored as the first nature park school in the Bergisches Land Nature Park. The Bergisches Land Nature Park concluded a cooperation agreement with the city of Gummersbach and the school for a period of five years.
In May 2017, the Heiligenhaus community primary school in Overath was honored as the second nature park school in the Nature Park Bergisches Land.
By cooperating with schools, the nature park wants to ensure that important topics from the region, such as nature and landscape, culture and handicrafts, as well as agriculture and forestry, are regularly dealt with in lessons or also in excursions or project days at school. In this way, "local history" should once again become an integral part of teaching.
