Nordbahntrasse: Cycle above the rooftops of Wuppertal
The Nordbahntrasse has very few uphill sections and runs over impressive viaducts, through long tunnels and bridges right through the city of Wuppertal. For cyclists, it closes the gap in the Bergisch Panoramic Cycle Trail between the Schee Tunnel connection to the coal railway (towards the Ruhr) and west to Vohwinkel and the Korkenziehertrasse.
From railway line to the Bergisch Panoramic Cycle Trail
Between 2006 and 2014, the Nordbahntrasse railway line was developed into a cycle path as part of a founding project by Wuppertal Bewegung e.V and the city of Wuppertal. A great deal of commitment and many millions of euros were needed to tackle this mammoth project. Five illuminated tunnels and brick viaducts up to 300 metres long are special highlights of the 23-kilometre route. Even though the Nordbahntrasse is primarily a car-free traffic route, it is also a meeting place and a paragon of civic action. This is still evident today in the many activities that take place here, such as festivals and school projects.
